Informative, elaborate and chock full of information

Given numerous of the less-than-favourable reviews here I thought I was going to find an average, if not hum-drum book. I was very enjoyably surprised! This is a outstanding book, very elaborate with good descriptions of the Karvonon method of calculating HRR (Heart Rate Reserve) and it is correlation to VO2 Max and Net VO2 and how to use this info to determine suitable training zones. It had a good deal of good divisions on respective other fitness activenesses (such as cycling, swimming and walking) and serves as a good resource for anybody wanting to get fit quicker while letting down your probabilities of injury or overtrainig.

I think if you combined this book with “Heart Rate Monitor Training for the Compleat Idiot” you’d posses all the selective information you’d ever need to train to greatest or most complete or best possible effectiveness with your heart rate monitor.

The book that in the end got me running successfully.

I do inline skating, skiing, and weight training, but each time I tried to take up running, I would hit a wall. I just couldn’t run for long sessions, and after a few I would hurt something and give up. Then I read when it comes to Ed Burke in Outside. This book, along with Burke’s “Optimal Muscle Recovery” (I tore an Achilles tendon and developed plantar fascitis from skating and skiing) and “Stretching” in the end got me to understand that I wasn’t building the base I necessitated in order to run better. By following the training programs in this book, I’ve principally increased my capacity without injury, and am tardily seeing my speed increase. Also liked this book because it took a dissimilar approach for each covered sport, and it treated inline skating with the respect it deserves as an endurance activity.

Feeble Heart Rate Training

This book tries to do too much: it wants to be a heart rate training book AND a book with regards to training for sporting events. The book is only 200 pages…get the picture? The book provides cursory info on training for respective sports: walking, running, cycling, in-line skating, and triathlon. Obviously, if you actually wanted to learn how to train competitively for these sports, this ISN’T the book for you. If you’re looking for a book that tells you how to create a workout you may do at a health club on a stair-climbing machine or elliptical trainer, etc….this is NOT the book for you. Sure, there’s a chapter on “group” exercise (i.e. aerobic class), but it FAR from practical. The firstborn chapters plainly delineate the heart zones rather than supplying suggestions for combining them meaningfully or supplying progressive programs. The book merely tries to cover too much in order to increase it is market.

Great for low light, outstanding focal length for DX, and autofocus will also work with D40, D40x, D60, and D5000 cameras

This Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX lens gives rise to sharp pictures and outstanding color and contrast. It is likewise perfective for portrait and other popular intents (semi-macro etc). This lens likewise gives rise to nice bokeh. The picture quality and bokeh quality are comparable with the other Nikon prime lenses (50mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.4 AF-S etc) lens which are famous for being sharp. Overall, this is a very versatile lens. On a non full frame DSLR (such as D40, D40x, D60, D5000, D80, D90, D200, D300 etc), this 35mm focal length is equivalent to with regards to 50mm which is considered a normal lens (normal as to being close to a person eye looking at angle perspective).

For $199 is it just hype?

Being a self proclaimed prosumer I’m not precisely a pro, but I am still demanding when it comes to camera hardware (and software for that matter). I mention this because it puts this review in the proper context.

On to the lens…

First off, when a $199 lens comes around from Nikon I have two thoughts, “Right on!” and “Seems finelooking cheap for Nikon”. I was skeptical but for $199 and all the great reviews why not give it a shot? Well, I did.

Amazon taunted me, B&H teased me, and my local camera shops didn’t precisely sooth my fear that it would be months before I could get my hand on one. Putting a pre-order in with all the above brought up establishments my local store came through primary (and for the same 199 dollar price tag).

I get it home, take it out of the box and the original thing that comes to mind is how much heavier it is than numerous of the kit lenses I have picked up. Yes it’s plastic, but the thing has a dissimilar level of quality from the other Nikon budget/consumer lenses. You may peruse the other reviews on Amazon and other websites for more specifics but the point is there is a noticeable difference.

I then put the thing on my camera (made sure to put on a filter first) and start out snapping away, outside, inside, and everyplace in between. The pictures are fantastic, in low light in particular. The bokeh isn’t top notch but for any individual but a pro this likely will be worth the tradeoff being the 199 price tag is a huge marketing point here. And don’t get me wrong, the bokeh isn’t terrible, I’ve just seen better with more (much more) pricey lenses.

So is it hype? Can a Nikon lens merchandising at $199 be good sufficient for the more demanding buyers out there? You betcha, this thing is probably the best and smartest buy I’ve made in the last five years. I have three other lenses and I may say without any hesitation the 35mm F/1.8 AF-S will be on my camera 90% of the time – if not more – from here on out.

In closing, if you love photography but don’t have the means to drop hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on nicer lenses, get annoyed at the fact that low light photography with the kit lens just doesn’t cut it, and want to expand, this is THE lens to get.

I promise you, you will not be disappointed.
